2019 College Captain

Hello, Redfield parents, teachers and students!

I hope that, with your help, we can make this year one of Redfield’s best. Hopefully, I will be able to follow in the footsteps of Michael Bouchahine, last year’s College Captain, and those of the Class of 2018. It is an absolute privilege to be the College Captain of 2019 and to be working with the incredible Vice-Captain Christian Jilwan and House Captains Ben Nader, Lourdes Nathan, Antonio Ayoub and Nathan Takchi. As a class, we have chosen the motto ignis ferrum temperat, which translates into “fire tempers the blade”. This motto reflects our acceptance that life’s beauties are only sweet after tasting the bitterness of life’s tribulations.

We, as the Class of 2019, are not going to lie to you and say that everything is going to be smooth sailing. There will be bumps along the way but the longest journey always starts with one step. These opportunities will never come about unless we put ourselves out there, try something new and make an effort in whatever we do, whether that be in sport, academics or the arts. This is something Redfield definitely caters for, with its four College sports (Rugby, Football, Cricket and Basketball), Public Speaking, Debating, Mock Trials, various music ensembles… and the list goes on.

We are all different and there is no one path – we need to make our own paths and be trailblazers, not trail-followers. But why should we even bother if life is always going to continue without us? The answer is simple: we all look for those sweet moments in life, like making it into the finals, passing an exam, a day out with friends. These moments don’t just come around everyday. Only through bearing through tribulations do we become stronger and, together, are able achieve so much more - “fire tempers the blade”.

From a very early age, the College has raised us under the motto veritas liberabit vos – “the truth will set you free” – and the four cardinal virtues (prudence, justice, temperance and fortitude). These values have not only helped us throughout our schooling lives but will continue to act as the foundations of who we are for the rest of our lives outside of school. We have been fortunate enough not only to learn about these virtues but to practise them in the countless community service projects that Redfield offers. This has given us an attitude of continuous self-giving. We, the Class of 2019, are honoured to work with all of you this year and look forward to taking our massive leap together.
