From the Headmaster
Our Years 7-9 students settle into examinations this week. One of our Year 8s has just told me he clocked up 10 hours on the weekend working through his study guides. What a terrific effort, definitely taking to heart Lao-Tzu’s maxim: “A scholar who cherishes the love of comfort is not fit to be deemed a scholar”.
Redfield ISA Basketball Teams - Sweep Finals

All four ISA basketball teams set off for Minto on Saturday morning, 14t March to play in their respective grand finals.  A season, highlighted not only by some big wins and great individual improvements but also some real demonstrations of teamwork, tenacity and fortitude, was finally drawing to a close.   First on the court were the 13’s, coached by Roland Barros and they started off strongly, leading St Pius X ten to two early in the first half.  The boys have been playing a very structured and disciplined style of basketball this year and it paid off in the second half as they protected their lead against a strong St Pius X fight back.   Mickey and Alex lead from the front line of defense and kept the pressure on St Pius, whilst Mason and Tom kept the score growing with a ton of baskets from underneath.  Young recruits Marvin and Clemens continued to step up to the challenge of a higher age group and showed their maturity by performing well.  With James a threat at both ends of the court the boys closed out the game, winning 42 to 30.

The crowd had gathered in time for the start of the 14’s, expecting a big game against St Patrick’s, who had knocked the boys out of the finals last year.  The teams finished the season with 1 win a piece against each other and a tough game was expected.

Coach Kim Rickards enforced a tight press defense in the first half which led to a few fast breaks and Redfield held onto a 21 to 26 lead at half time.  The strong defense however was costing the boys some fouls and St Patricks found themselves shooting penalty shots midway through the second half.
They were unable to make enough though and Redfield, continued to compile points, lead by Adam and Bernie and with the assistance of Will, Brendon and Angelo grabbing rebounds underneath the boys were unstoppable.  Francis controlled the ball well in the clutch and some sharp shooting by David kept the game out of St Patrick’s reach.  Redfield winning 38 to 46.

The 15’s faced off against the 4th place finishing Oakhill and controlled the game from the start.  Coach Ton Jaucian took the opportunity to give everyone a chance to rack up minutes in the big game and the scoring was well shared amongst the boys.   Faced with an opportunity to finish their third straight season undefeated the boys stepped up, Jermaine and Marc sinking plenty of baskets from underneath and AJ, Luke and Ollie all hitting late threes.  Jason was also shooting well, claiming some sharp jump shots and Matt’s huge leap was always a threat in defense.  The boys ran away with a 60 to 9 win.

Watching the first three teams win laid the pressure on coach Ian Mejia and the 17’s who were up against the top place finishing St Pius X.  Redfield lost by 20 in their previous encounter and the boys were keen to make amends in the grand final, coming off a couple of good wins late in the season.

A fast paced game ensued and the teams traded baskets for the entire first half, just three points separating them at half time.  Foul trouble was a factor for both teams and would play a big part in keeping Redfield in the game, the boys making 4 clutch free throws in the last minute of regular time to force the game into overtime, not to mention a huge three pointer by Chris to lock the scores close to the buzzer.

Overtime ended with the scores locked at 38, again following some great free throw shooting by Arville and we headed into sudden death basketball whereby the first team to score wins.

The boys only needed one chance to seal the win, Sal picking up the loose ball, head down, moving straight towards the basket and seeking a foul to get to the free throw line. The shot was forced up, bounced off the backboard and dropped in…  No foul was called but it wasn’t needed, the boys celebrating a great 38 to 40 win.

Congratulations must be extended to all teams, coaches, managers, parents and supporters. Not just from Redfield but also our competing schools who all played in the best of spirits.  Thanks for a great season and good luck for the remainder of the domestic season and upcoming winter season.

All the best and thanks again for all of your support.
