Special Education in Redfield Primary
It is exciting to be apart of the special needs department at Redfield College. With the many changes in neurological research there is always something new to learn and we have had many successes in using this knowledge. At various times, depending on needs, groups are formed for extra:
- Spalding
- Reading
- Comprehension – a visualizing & verbalizing program
- Written expression
- Mathematics
- Handwriting
Typically our work is with small groups of boys who meet together several times each week in the special needs rooms.
Discerning the causes of learning difficulties.
To work effectively at this remedial level, underlying factors causing learning difficulties need to be investigated. Questionnaires are completed by teachers and more informal testing done. Our vision testing program is a useful tool to discover initial vision difficulties, with research showing, on average, that 20% of students manifest vision problems. Sometimes external consultants are required; we can provide information that may assist you in sourcing consultants for auditory or visual processing assessment. Screening for Scotopic Irlen Sensitivity Syndrome has been useful.
BMX Movement classes.
In addition to the small special needs groups that operate throughout the week, there is a movement class. The boys love this class and are proud of the improvements they are making. The exercises are designed to stimulate the brain highlighting coordination, balance and spatial difficulties.
