The College PD/H/PE program consists of both Physical Education and Health classes. Students in Years 7-10 undergo two Theory and two Practical lessons per fortnight whilst Primary students engage in one Theory lesson and two Practical lessons per week. Physical Education is not the same as games of sport. It is education in and through movement. The aim of the Physical Education program is to equip students with the necessary motor skills, understanding of human movement and effective qualities that will ensure a lifetime of balanced involvement in a wide range of healthy recreational and leisure activities, undertaken in accordance with ever developing principles of safety and effectiveness. An emphasis has been placed upon the benefits of teamwork and co-operation, the benefits of performing a task well and the aesthetic appreciation of physical performance. At Redfield, we endeavour to stress the importance of tolerance and sportsmanship as well as striving for “ultimate performance” (doing your best). Health lessons have allowed the students to learn about different aspects of their health and wellbeing. This has been achieved by looking at a wide range of issues, including: sense of self, balanced lifestyle, components of fitness and healthy eating habits just to name a few. Redfield Primary students are presented with opportunities to apply the skills acquired in practical lessons at Gala days in a variety of sports and Hills Zone inter-school sport competitions exposing our Year 6 students to competition with other schools. During Term 4, swimming lessons were conducted for all students in Years 2-9 during their scheduled PE lessons. Boys are placed in ability based groups and there is focus on improvements in fitness and stroke technique over the 6 week program. The PDHPE HSC and Preliminary Courses are challenging and recommended for students with strong results in Year 10 English and Science. Lessons are theory based and the focus is on the health of individuals and communities and the factors that influence movement skill and physical activity levels. Scientific aspects to be studied include anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and skill acquisition. The syllabus provides a direct link with study and vocational pathways in the areas of recreational, paramedical, movement and health sciences. Related career opportunities are expanding and gaining recognition throughout the community as legitimate fields of endeavour.
Aim of PDHPE in the Curriculum
PDHPE and Sports are a vital component in the total education of every boy at Redfield College. We therefore try to produce a boy who knows and understands the healthy maintenance and good care of the body and is able to use it effectively in all movement patterns. We also aim to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes conducive to health-enhancing behaviours and appropriate lifestyles, as well as promoting the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of all students. This important contribution towards the total development of each boy is taken very seriously at Redfield. The values espoused in our School motto charge us with the responsibility of making this aspect of education an integral aspect of the educative process at Redfield. Our religious base and the family support characteristic of Redfield can be complemented by our teaching programmes in PDHPE, helping students to make informed decisions about their lifestyle and environment.
Physical Education Class Procedure
No uniform, school shoes etc. to be left in the classroom, they should be left in change rooms. Boys should change in the change rooms only.
(A) Beginning of Period - at the start of each PE class, boys go directly to the change rooms allocated by their teacher. Once changed, boys are to remain in the change room and wait for their teacher to make roll-call.
(B) Conclusion of Period - at the end of each period boys are to change back into their school uniform as quickly and quietly as possible. They will then wait until the bell rings. No boy is to leave before the bell.
(C) Illness or Injury. If a boy cannot participate for any reason, he must have a note from his parent in his student diary. Every attempt will be made to devise an activity for the boys to participate, so uniform should still be brought to each lesson.
