From the Headmaster
Our Years 7-9 students settle into examinations this week. One of our Year 8s has just told me he clocked up 10 hours on the weekend working through his study guides. What a terrific effort, definitely taking to heart Lao-Tzu’s maxim: “A scholar who cherishes the love of comfort is not fit to be deemed a scholar”.

 Gifted and Talented Programs

Extension of students in Redfield Primary

Redfield Primary currently offers extension activities to students in a number of ways:

Programmed extension within the home classroom.
Early finishers booklets are available to all classes. These booklets include detailed problem solving, comprehension exercises, code breakers, mazes, word challengers etc. These are supplemented by a great books program, Mathematics challenge cards, worksheets etc. Teachers are also encouraged to stimulate stronger students by setting higher learning and open-ended tasks, research exercises, and by class discussions.

Extension by withdrawal from class.

Extension Activity Table
Each classroom has a range of hands-on games and puzzles that are designed to stimulate the mind, covering spatial and kinaesthetic skills, maths and language.

Other activities
.
The school also offers debating classes, public speaking contests, chess club and various music programmes.

Extension by withdrawal from class

Aim
The purpose of extension in Redfield Primary is to maintain a student’s interest and to stimulate intrinsic motivation and higher levels of learning and thinking. Extension is not acceleration, e.g. to have Year 3 boys doing Year 4 work.
How the program works
  • Students are withdrawn from the Years 4-6.
  • Students work in small groups, approximately four children withdrawn from each class. The extension group meets for two periods on alternate weeks.
  • The withdrawal periods have been allocated with class teacher consultation to minimise disruptions.
Selection
  • Children are selected for the withdrawal groups based on the previous year’s results, commitment, ability to work in groups, subject interest, etc. The suggestions of the previous year teacher are sought. New students are assessed from previous Basic Skills Tests, reports, other information supplied with the application, etc.
  • Once students are selected we require a full year commitment from the students. They are required to catch up on classwork missed. Actual homework from these extension groups will be minimal but able students will find that their classroom teacher will be raising his normal homework expectations according to their ability.
  • A child selected in Mathematics will not automatically be selected for English. Placement will be offered on merit.

Extension Program Content

Mathematics
  • Year 4: Problem solving and group work.
  • Years 5 and 6: Maths Olympiad (five tests of five questions for each year), an Australasian competition involving some 1000 schools leading to individual and team awards.
English

  • Love of writing and an appreciation of the language
  • Word play, metaphors and similes
  • Poetry
  • Creative writing
  • Public speaking
Evaluation
  • Year 4 boys are evaluated via completion of their class problem solving book. Consideration is also given to questioning in class, reasoning of solutions, behaviour and assistance to others in group work.
  • Year 5 and 6 boys are primarily assessed from their results in the Maths Olympiad. Consideration is also given to questioning in class, reasoning of solutions, behaviour and assistance to others in group work.
  • All year levels participate in public speaking, creative writing and the creation of their own poetry booklet.
  • Public speaking: speech preparation, content, manner and method.
  • Writing: planning, editing, presentation and completion of the booklet. Effort in improving vocabulary, complexity of sentence structure, use of particular parts of speech, and writing techniques are assessed.
