From the Headmaster
Our Years 7-9 students settle into examinations this week. One of our Year 8s has just told me he clocked up 10 hours on the weekend working through his study guides. What a terrific effort, definitely taking to heart Lao-Tzu’s maxim: “A scholar who cherishes the love of comfort is not fit to be deemed a scholar”.

Debating Reports
Year 7 Debate This was an excellent debate, overall. Arden did a great job of making a good comeback after an uneven start, having prepared their debate from the wrong perspective! Both teams spoke very well, with good eye contact, good use of voice and good posture. Both teams also raised very good points in the debate, on the topic that “Physical education should be compulsory in schools.” Arden took the debate, with superior rebuttals, and a great display of the ability to think very well under pressure.
Year 8 Debate The debate against Arden was a tough affair in which our boys came up against some very experienced debaters who were well prepared. The Arden team has been together for a couple of years and has an enviable track record in high school debates. The Redfield boys prepared well and did their best, but were outclassed by a superior opposition. Our students worked hard and should be commended on their efforts, and their grace in defeat. This was a learning experience for our team and I am sure they came away with some valuable insights that they can use in their next debate.
Year 9 Debate Very well done to our debaters from year 9 – Andrew Bell, Douglas George, Edward Chin and Matthew Lennon – who defeated Arden in their debate last Friday. The competition was fierce but our boys triumphed in the end through sheer weight of argument. The opposition did not use their allocated times and thus presented their ideas in a rather sketchy manner. Our year 9 team is shaping up very nicely – keep it up lads!
Year 10 Debate The year 10 debate on Friday versus Arden College was on the topic: Physical force is a justifiable method of punishment for criminals. Our boys were able to show their skills despite worthy competition to win on this occasion. Arden were enthusiastic and engaged well in a conflict debate but our boys were more organized and showed a better manner on this occasion. Well done to James Tudehope, Zain Swaleh and Charles DeSouza.
