Music lessons, extensively covering the Board of Studies Music Syllabus, are provided by a specialist music teacher.
Years 2 – 4 have one 45 minute lesson per week whilst Years 5 and 6 have two 45 minute lessons. The students experience music concepts through performing (singing, playing instruments and movement), listening (to identify styles and concepts) and composing. Non-melodic instruments and an extensive range of xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels and recorders are used.
Recorder-playing (sopranino, descant, treble and tenor) is a feature of lessons from Year 3, and assists in learning how to read and write traditional staff notation. This is also an important skill used in the Primary Instrumental Program. All Boys in Year 5 and 6 learn to play a wind (clarinet, flute or saxophone) or brass (trumpet, trombone, French Horn or euphonium) instrument in small-group lessons provided by peripatetic teachers and the Band Director. In addition, all these students perform in class bands and have the opportunity to exhibit their considerable skills at Music Night, Presentation Night, Performing Arts Night and guest appearances where appropriate. The boys in the outstanding Primary Choir are selected by audition and the Choir involves more than half of the Primary students. The Choir performs at Presentation Night, Music Night, eisteddfods and other significant occasions. Each year, Redfield College also hosts performances by quality professional musicians/groups so that the boys are exposed to a wide variety of musical styles.
These exciting initiatives produce competent musicians and provide the basis for much enjoyment and satisfaction and are excellent grounding for advanced music studies in secondary school.
