From the Headmaster
Our Years 7-9 students settle into examinations this week. One of our Year 8s has just told me he clocked up 10 hours on the weekend working through his study guides. What a terrific effort, definitely taking to heart Lao-Tzu’s maxim: “A scholar who cherishes the love of comfort is not fit to be deemed a scholar”.

 BAND and CHOIR

PRIMARY MUSIC

Music lessons, extensively covering the Board of Studies Music Syllabus, are provided by a specialist music teacher.

Years 2 – 4 have one 45 minute lesson per week whilst Years 5 and 6 have two 45 minute lessons. The students experience music concepts through performing (singing, playing instruments and movement), listening (to identify styles and concepts) and composing. Non-melodic instruments and an extensive range of xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels and recorders are used.

Recorder-playing (sopranino, descant, treble and tenor) is a feature of lessons from Year 3, and assists in learning how to read and write traditional staff notation. This is also an important skill used in the Primary Instrumental Program. All Boys in Year 5 and 6 learn to play a wind (clarinet, flute or saxophone) or brass (trumpet, trombone, French Horn or euphonium) instrument in small-group lessons provided by peripatetic teachers and the Band Director. In addition, all these students perform in class bands and have the opportunity to exhibit their considerable skills at Music Night, Presentation Night, Performing Arts Night and guest appearances where appropriate. The boys in the outstanding Primary Choir are selected by audition and the Choir involves more than half of the Primary students. The Choir performs at Presentation Night, Music Night, eisteddfods and other significant occasions. Each year, Redfield College also hosts performances by quality professional musicians/groups so that the boys are exposed to a wide variety of musical styles.

These exciting initiatives produce competent musicians and provide the basis for much enjoyment and satisfaction and are excellent grounding for advanced music studies in secondary school.

 YEAR 5 and 6
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Many students undertake weekly lessons in the College under professional musicians.  Lessons are timetabled during the school day for numerous instruments including piano, saxophone, percussion, violin, guitar and trumpet.  Fees are payable in advance and invoiced with the College tuition fees.  Use of musical instruments may be arranged under a rental/purchase scheme.  Boys who undertake lessons are expected to commit themselves to daily practice and are encouraged to join the College Band or one of the musical ensembles which practise once or twice weekly.

As an extension in music curriculum Year 5, each student is learning a musical instrument where he will progress to play in an ensemble. In Year 6 the playing has developed to a band level. This gives an opportunity for students to perform in public. From the start of 2005 students in Year 5 have been involved in this instrument al tuition program for which parents pay with school fees at the start of relevant terms. From the start of 2007 this program has been extended to Year 6 students also. Enquiries on all aspects of instrument tuition and College Band should be directed to Mr Paul Quinn (9899 6968).

Redfield Performing Arts Night is held every two years. Each concert showcases all the Primary students and many of the Secondary students – soloists, ensembles, bands and whole-class items.   It never ceases to amaze us just how much artistic talent can be found at Redfield. What a challenge it is to present this talent in a fresh way each time!

In 2009, the music tutors at Redfield are:
